Iconic Splunk Apps

Give your App an Icon

You can add a trendy, unique graphic to identify your Splunk apps pretty easily. In fact, you really don’t have to do any extra programming or even re-configuring.

By just knowing a little bit about how Splunk manages its apps, you can “drop in” an icon for Splunk to display next to the name of your app on the Splunk home page. Here is all you need to do:

If you are familiar with the Splunk “app.conf” configuration file – forget it! You don’t need it for this. There is no setting in that (or any other) file for icon images.

To include an icon, (one that is properly formatted) graphic files need just be copied into the /static folder of your app and Splunk will be magically detect it and display it.

For example:

<app_directory>/static/appIcon.png

A few “tricks”:

  • You need to name you icon file “appicon” -and the capital “I” is required!
  • You’ll need to make sure that your icon image is a 36px by 36px PNG file or Splunk will ignore it.
  • In addition, although it is not necessary to restart Splunk after adding an icon image, you will need to clear the cache to make sure your browser “finds” the image file (to clear the cache, you can go to the Splunk main URL and type “/info” after 8000. At the bottom of the page there will be a cache control to force your browser to update. Doing this should make the changes appear.

Now my “Extremely Searchable” custom Splunk App has its own icon:

Keep calm and Splunk on!
